EMISSIONS NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS IN CALIFORNIA

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) prohibits the sale and use of emissions-related aftermarket parts for motorcycles unless the part is either (1) a "replacement part," (2) a part that has been approved for use by an ARB Executive Order ("EO Part"), or (3) a part for competition use only.  These three categories are defined in more detail below.

(1) Replacement Parts

Replacement Parts are aftermarket parts that are functionally equivalent to the stock part they are intended to replace and therefore would not impact emissions. These parts are legal for sale and use in California. Aftermarket exhaust system components are considered to be “replacement parts” if:

(a) The motorcycle’s stock exhaust system does not contain a catalytic converter and installation of the aftermarket exhaust system components does not require the removal or replacement any emissions-related equipment originally attached to the stock exhaust system, such as an oxygen sensor; or
(b) The motorcycle’s stock exhaust system contains a catalytic converter upstream of the muffler and the installation of the aftermarket component (e.g., muffler) does not require removal of the catalytic converter or the removal or replacement any emissions-related equipment originally attached to the stock exhaust system, such as an oxygen sensor.

(2) Executive Order Parts

Executive Order Parts are emissions-related aftermarket parts that ARB has evaluated and determined do not adversely impact emissions.  An Executive Order (EO) is the document signed by an ARB official documenting ARB approval for specified motorcycles. Any aftermarket exhaust system that replaces or otherwise impacts emission control equipment, including catalytic converters, requires an EO to be sold for use in California unless the system is for competition use only.

(3) Competition Use Only Parts

Competition Use Only Parts are aftermarket parts that replace or otherwise interfere with the operation of an emission control device, such as a catalytic converter or oxygen sensor, which may be sold for use in California only for closed course competition.  Competition use only parts are not legal for use in California except for closed course competition.
